Coach Ian – Week in Review 12/20/2020:

What I’m Reading:

PB: The Paul Brown Story – Paul Brown and Jack Clarry

A Promised Land – Barack Obama

Boxing Share of the Week:

This Friday, we saw Gennadiy Golovkin stop an overmatched Kamil Szeremeta. Not much to take away from the fight, GGG never saw him as a threat and fought accordingly. Kamil, for his part, had heart but really pushed his punches. GGG defended well but never felt threatened and could do what he wanted – he landed a powerful jab at will (and even knocked him down with it), turned that over to a left hook from time to time (and dropped him with that), or he could land his cross, and knocked him down with that as well. The ref stopped the fight before the 7th round, after Kamil had been knocked down 4 times.

The Golovkin Brothers:

More interesting than the fight to me is reading about Max Golovkin, GGG’s twin brother who was supposedly better than Gennadiy growing up, but watched his brother compete on the Olympic team and pursue his professional dreams while he stayed back and took care of their family. They couldn’t decide which of the two would go to compete, and GGG got the nod because he was a mere 15 minutes older than his brother.  Read more here.

Happy 30th Birthday to Alex Rodriguez! Congrats on the 30-miler!

Alex Rodriguez running 30 miles for his 30th birthday with Coach Ian

This Saturday, former Dreamland boxer Alex Rodriguez ran 30 miles to celebrate his 30th birthday from Santa Cruz to Big Sur. I ran a part of the route with him; I did an 16 miler by running the first 8 miles with him and turning back. I’m happy to see the progression Alex has made in trail and distance running!

The Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon:

The Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon, 10K & 5K are GOING VIRTUAL and I’m joining in as an official Ambassador! Enter any of the races individually or sign up for the “Triple” Peaks Challenge to tackle all three. You’ll receive a participant shirt and medal just for signing up. Registration opens, Nov. 2nd.

This Week at Dreamland Boxing:

Come by the gym to grab some gear or holidays gifts to help support the gym!

Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, Jesse and Gina decided that it was in the best interest of the gym and the community to close for the month of December. Stay safe, healthy, and responsible everyone so we can get back in the gym early next year!

Meanwhile, I have continued to host our virtual boxing sessions with the same two students that I have been training all year, Wes and Forrest and this week also trained with Robert. Thank you greatly for keeping your memberships active and continuing to support our gym during this time. And I’m personally glad to have been able to aid in your boxing development all year! This week we discussed:

  • The Shakur Stevenson – Toka Kahn Clary fight
  • Discussed how we would approach being in the corner for Toka. What advice we would give to the “B” side fighter to give him a better chance to win.
  • Counter-punching drills
  • Angle-drills
  • KB Swing circuits
  • Turkish Get-Up circuits

You can find a full list of drills if you are a current Dreamland Boxing member in the Premium Drills section of my website.
