Book I’m Reading

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

I’m excited for this one. Sleep impacts everything. I used to think of sleep as some unnecessary part of my day. The prevailing notion was to be successful, you should get used to sleeping less. But sleeping more may help you to be more productive.

The book covers a bunch of interesting topics such as how sleep interacts with:

  • Athletic recovery
  • Productivity
  • Aging
  • Cancer
  • Blood sugar control and appetite/weight gain
  • Longevity
  • Mental health

As a former boxer with a predisposition towards Alzheimer’s, I’m really interested in learning more about the glymphatic system and how the brain flushes itself of toxic plaques during deep sleep.

Don’t neglect your sleep!

Run Streak and Running Goals:

Progress: As of 6/27/21, I’ve now run 772 miles for the year, while maintaining my 178-day run streak.

Boxing Highlights:

Gabriel Rosado breaking down his knockout of Bektemir Melikuziev with Bernard Hopkins.

Last week, Gabriel Rosado scored a brutal knockout over the highly favored prospect Bektemir Melikuziev. This is an awesome exchange where Rosado talks about what set up his knockout punch.

Rosado was dropped in the 1st round with a body shot. Melikuziev was heavily attacking the body thereafter, and Rosado seemed to be overreacting to protect his body. He had his elbows tucked in and was bracing himself for Melikuziev’s body attack.

At this point, I was waiting to see who made the next adjustment. Typically, a heavy body attack can set up shots to the head. But Rosado was the one who made the first adjustment, opting to stand in there and throw with Melikuziev rather than be reactive and only try to defend those body shots. He threw a perfect overhand right while Melikuziev was targeting his body to score the knockout. Rosado, the veteran, was baiting Bektemir Melikuziev before landing that shot.
