North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail

By Scott Jurek and Jenny Jurek

Run Streak and Running Goals:

Progress: As of 7/11/21, I’ve now run 830 miles for the year, while maintaining my 192-day run streak. Running the Big Chief 50K in one week!

What I’m Trying:

On Running CloudUltra Trail Running Shoes: So far, not too impressed. While they look great, they’re really stiff and not too comfortable. After my ultra, I’ll break them in more and see if my opinion changes, but as of right now I only like them for their appearance and wouldn’t train too heavily in them.

Chess Boxing: Coming to Dreamland?

World Chess Boxing Championships – 1 of 2

Chess Boxing has been a little known hybrid sport that started in Berlin in 2003. Chess boxing matches are done with alternating rounds of chess and boxing, with the chess rounds happening right there in the boxing ring. A participant can win by either knockout or checkmate (or decision).

For the past few years, Chris “The Warrior” Washington, Jesse Huerta, and I have been playing chess on the app “Chess With Friends”. We always joke that we’ll have a chess boxing tournament. Who knows, maybe one day.

In the meantime, we have the Willow Glen Senior Center Chess Club meeting at Dreamland on Fridays at 9AM-12PM and on Sundays between 1PM-4PM. Come join us! Email dreamlandboxing7@gmail.com with any questions.

This Week at Dreamland Boxing:

Tickets to Mark Salgado’s pro debut are now available! Physicals will be given by Dr. Greg on Wednesday at 6PM ($25). See the full updates here.

Also, I have continued to host our virtual boxing sessions. Thank you to our members for keeping your memberships active and continuing to support our gym during this time. And I’m personally glad to have been able to aid in your boxing development all year!

Our virtual practices this week featured the following:

  • A Left hook (or southpaw right hook) breakdown
  • Throwing the left hook with power!
  • How to defend the left hook
  • Setting up combinations with the left hook
  • Body weight circuits
  • Kettlebell Single-Arm Swings and Turkish Get-Ups
  • And more!

You can find a full list of drills if you are a current Dreamland Boxing member in the Premium Drills section of my website.
