Coach Ian – Week in Review 01/02/2022

Happy New Year everyone!!

Book I’m Reading

Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman

“We’ve been granted the mental capacities to make almost infinitely ambitious plans, yet practically no time at all to put them into action.”

A Small Boxing World – When You Know Your Fighters’ Opponent:

A potential fight with Mark Salgado fell through, as his opponent caught COVID over the holidays. Wishing all the best to his opponent.

Mark’s next opponent was actually going to be someone I trained with in Burbank, CA back in 2010. He trained alongside Devo Donaldson, who I sparred with frequently during my time in LA, and Marlon Fernando, the strength and conditioning coach to many pros. I didn’t train with Mark’s opponent nearly as often, as we changed gyms to the Pico Union Boxing Club in 2011.

Devo Donaldson ended up fighting Dreamland fighter, Moises Benitez, who I trained with since 2004. I still remember when Devo called me to tell me they were going to fight. Shit, I thought. Devo’s career hadn’t gone as planned, but I was still at his pro debut in 2013 to support him. Devo’s my guy. But it’s all business.

There have been other matches that have almost been made between friends I know. But this one with Mark was probably the closest to happening. All I can say is that you have to put all that aside when its time to train for a fight. Boxing is a business. And Mark and his opponent are both chasing the same dream. It’s never anything personal. You can always be friends afterwards. But we train for him like he’s another obstacle in our way.

Run Streak and Running Goals:

Progress: In 2021, I ran 1,505 miles for the year, completing my 365-day run streak.

Coach Ian’s Classes:

As you may know, I am currently donating my time to host virtual online boxing classes for the members of our 501c(3) non-profit boxing gym, Dreamland Boxing. As an active member of Dreamland, you will receive the materials and video recaps of each lesson through my website under the “Premium Drills” section.

Dreamland has also increased its outdoor capacity to 16 students per class, and lifted limits on how many classes you can sign up for in a week. Join me for a class on Fridays at 4:30PM!

Our practices this week featured the following:

  • How to jab and not be countered with an overhand
  • The importance of doubling up the jab
  • When to step out of range vs when to smother
  • Footwork
  • Body weight circuits
  • And more!

You can view our full practices here.
