Coach Ian – Week in Review:

Something I Tried:

Trader Joe’s Greek Goddess Salad Dressing – This is the best salad dressing I’ve found! Clean ingredients [AVOCADO, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, GREEN ONIONS, LEMON JUICE, CHIVES, PARSLEY, OLIVE OIL BLEND (OLIVE OIL, EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL), YELLOW ONION, BASIL, GARLIC, SEA SALT, BLACK PEPPER] and tastes great!

Air Quality – Purple Air vs. AirNow:

I’ve often gone to both Airnow and Purple Air to track the air quality in the Bay Area, often confused by why the numbers were so different. This article gives a great description of the difference in the metrics. In short, PurpleAir’s data is much more timely (averaging the past 10 minutes vs the past few hours) and has many more sensors scattered throughout a region, but when you filter on PurpleAir, you should apply the LRAPA or AQandU filters.

Running Tip – Preventing Shin Splints:

I just wanted to share this article for some great tips on how to prevent shin splints. If you run frequently, chances are you’ve had to deal with shin splints at some point in time. During my time training sprint workouts with San Jose Fit, we would do these exercises before doing our sprints.

A fun conversation I’ve had recently:

Recently, I’ve been catching up with members of our boxing, running, and fitness community to see what they’re up to! I enjoy highlighting some of the members of our community and bridging different communities – boxing, running, and fitness, so people can see a little bit of what others do.

This week, I spoke to Too Legit Fitness founder Bertrand Newson. Bertrand Newson is the founder of Too Legit Fitness (established 2011). Too Legit Fitness is a well-known training program in the Bay Area with over 700 members and hosts the official training program for the Silicon Valley Half Marathon and has coached several athletes (including me!) in long distance running and pursuing many different fitness goals of all ability levels.

In this interview, we discuss Bertrand’s journey in long-distance running, starting Too Legit Fitness, training during the pandemic, his roles with the Big Sur Marathon and Silicon Valley Half Marathon, and his coaching services. Find out more about Too Legit Fitness at www.toolegitfitness.com.

What’s New at Dreamland Boxing

As you may know, I am currently donating my time to host virtual online boxing classes for the members of our 501c(3) non-profit boxing gym, Dreamland Boxing. As an active member of Dreamland, you will receive the materials and video recaps of each lesson through my website under the “Premium Drills” section. This week I posted an entire section on countering the right cross and did various drills to work inside and outside range. I also posted a breathwork and yoga class for premium members, featuring Ujjayi Pranayama and a modified Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril) Pranayama.

On Friday, my drills focused on angles and pivoting to our right. It was great seeing so many familiar faces at our class! Come by next week for a chance to win a free Dreamland Boxing facemask!

Meanwhile, Santa Clara County has been upgraded to allow 10% indoor capacity for gyms! I am taking things cautiously, and am keeping my classes outdoors for the time being, but Dreamland does have indoor options to suit your needs.
