2019 Races

In 2019, I ran 3 marathons and my first ultramarathon. I cut down my training hours/miles heavily this year to keep other life priorities in check. I’m not the greatest athlete by any means, I just enjoy the challenge of pushing my limits to see what I’m capable of. I’ve found that marathon racing itself, is a marathon and not a sprint. I’m no longer looking at each race with a PR-or-bust mindset, I just look forward to each challenge with the broader perspective of how running fits into my life at that given moment. So rather than a 2020… Read More »2019 Races

Dreamland Boxing Masters World Championships (2019)

This past weekend marked the 2nd Annual Dreamland Boxing Master’s World Championship, a two day tournament hosted by Dreamland for Masters fighters (age 35+) all over the world. In the two years that we’ve hosted the tournament, we’ve had participants from USA, Australia, Canada, Austria, Russia, England, Germany, Argentina, and all over the US! Due to how difficult it is to get matched up, many of these fighters travel to compete and do it for the pure love of the sport. Many come without coaches and are assigned one at registration. I volunteered to help and ended up working 35… Read More »Dreamland Boxing Masters World Championships (2019)

10 Recommended Running and Health Books

Here are 10 books on running and health that I’ve read recently that I would highly recommend: 26 Marathons by Meb Keflezighi: Each chapter covers one of the 26 marathons that Meb raced competitively, and the lessons he learned from it. He was remarkably consistent, over a long period of time.  Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown: I was recommended this one a week before my VO2 max test.  Top takeaways: Practice nasal breathing and breath holds! I learned about your BOLT score, which measures how long you can hold your breathe and how that affects you in every aspect of… Read More »10 Recommended Running and Health Books

HRV

Tracking recovery – Heart Rate Variability (HRV): I ditched my Fitbit last year and switched over to an Oura Ring. While my Fitbit was a great tool to get me off the couch, I realized I need less motivation to get up and moving, and more incentive to rest and recover. Now, instead of being ultra-competitive with step challenges, I wake up looking for high recovery scores. The Oura (like the Apple Watch) tracks Heart Rate Variability, or the beat to beat variance in heart rate during sleep. This data provides a good view on your autonomic nervous system activity… Read More »HRV

Race Report: Mountains 2 Beach Marathon

On Sunday, I ran the Mountains 2 Beach marathon in Ventura. It was a course meant for a BQ/PR, but my goal was a sub 4. My strategy for this race goes against what you’re taught – to start fast. Again, in training I was only getting ~20 miles per week, but this time I added in more cross training and interval training. Based on the low mileage training and my experiences, I guessed I would cramp up around the 3 hour mark. So the goal was to run with the 3:30 pacer for the first half for a 1:45… Read More »Race Report: Mountains 2 Beach Marathon

Ultramarathon Fueling: Race Day

Finally, I take HVMN ketone esters as a direct source of ketones that I can take while also consuming carbs. A typical keto diet is so strict on restricting carbs because carbs trigger an insulin release, which stops fat burning. Then begins the carb cravings, sugar addiction/crashes, and, over the long term, insulin resistance. So a typical keto diet, as originally prescribed as a medical treatment, has people consuming next to no carbohydrates to force the body into ketosis.

Race Report: Antelope Canyon Ultramarathon

First ultramarathon in the books! The Antelope Canyon 55km was a beautiful course in Page, Arizona, passing Horseshoe Bend and running through the Lower Antelope Slot Canyon. The course had some tough technical sections and was made more difficult as we were running mostly in sand. Thankfully, it was well organized with plenty of aid stations along the way. After a PR-chasing 2018, this was my only athletic goal for 2019 – a distance PR and my first ultra. 2019’s been mad busy for me between juggling my finance career, training a bigger than usual team for Dreamland Boxing Training Center’s… Read More »Race Report: Antelope Canyon Ultramarathon
